Ampelmann enters US offshore wind market

Dutch offshore access provider Ampelmann has entered the US offshore wind market. The company has signed a contract with marine transportation and towing company Otto Candies, to supply an E1000 motion compensated system, helping with the construction of three Ørsted and Eversource-led offshore wind farms.

As well as marking Ampelmann’s entry to the US offshore wind market, the contract sees the introduction of Walk to Work (W2W) vessels to the American renewable energy sector. The E1000 motion compensated system will be deployed on the
South Fork, Revolution, and Sunrise offshore wind farms. It will be fitted to the Inspection, Maintenance and Repair vessel (IMR) Paul Candies, to support the hook-up and commissioning of turbines, in Q3 2023.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Otto Candies
,” said Steven Kaub, Ampelmann’s business developer for American offshore wind, “for choosing us to facilitate this important operation. Over the years we have developed a solid relationship with Otto Candies, and their enduring trust in our systems and services allows us to showcase what we can offer to the US offshore renewable market.”

The system will provide safe access for personnel in sea states of up to 4,5m Hs during its year-long operation. It will also be used to hoist up to a tonne of cargo, equipment, and tools, and the gangway’s fuel transfer capabilities will, according to Ampelmann, enable generator and turbine testing.

Ampelmann suggest that, “converting the Paul Candies into a W2W vessel, the E1000 will enable the servicing of multiple turbines at once, greatly increasing the speed and efficiency of operations.

While this is Ampelmann’s first sojourn into offshore wind in the US, it has over ten years’ experience in the American offshore access market and nearly fifteen years’ experience in offshore wind. Over the last decade, motion compensated systems have reached a familiar status in American oil & gas, but now the E1000 will be used in the US offshore wind market for the first time.
