Vineyard Wind 1: Largest operating offshore wind farm in the U.S. now generating power

Iberdrola's US subsidiary, Avangrid, along with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), announced that the wind farm is currently delivering over 136 megawatts (MW) to the electric grid in Massachusetts. This capacity is sufficient to power more than 64,000 homes and businesses in the state.

Located off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Vineyard Wind 1 marks the first large-scale offshore wind project in the US. The project has successfully commissioned 10 wind turbines, with a total of 47 foundations and transition pieces installed so far. Upon completion, Vineyard Wind 1 will consist of 62 turbines, delivering a total of 806 MW, enough to supply electricity to 400,000 homes and businesses.

Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra emphasized the project's benefits, including the creation of well-paying union jobs, local investments, and the provision of clean energy to meet Massachusetts’ growing electricity demands. Offshore wind is a crucial energy resource for the Northeast, particularly in addressing winter peak demand. A 2018 assessment by ISO New England highlighted that 800 MW of offshore wind during a cold snap could save ratepayers $40-45 million and reduce carbon emissions by 108,000 metric tons.

Vineyard Wind 1 began offshore construction in late 2022, achieving significant progress with the installation of the nation's first offshore substation in July 2023. The project has also made a substantial impact on job creation, with nearly 937 union jobs created during the construction phase, surpassing initial commitments.

Once fully operational, Vineyard Wind 1 is expected to save customers $1.4 billion over its first 20 years of operation and reduce carbon emissions by more than 1.6 million metric tons annually, equating to removing 325,000 cars from the road each year.

This development underscores the critical role of offshore wind in the US energy landscape, positioning it as a key player in the transition to sustainable energy.
