The Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) has announced the launch of a highly anticipated feasibility study for offshore wind energy, marking a significant step toward clean, renewable energy in the region.

This pioneering initiative, led by the TCI Government’s Energy and Utilities Department, will be conducted under the European Union-funded Green Overseas Programme, implemented by Expertise France, and in partnership with the global consultancy RICARDO-AEA LIMITED. The study aims to assess the potential for fixed and floating offshore wind energy farms in the waters surrounding TCI.

Mr. Delano Arthur, Commissioner of the Energy and Utilities Department, stated, “The vast and varied waters surrounding our Islands offer great potential for clean, reliable energy generation, boosting renewable energy production while enabling TCI’s limited land availability to be used for other development.”

The feasibility study will explore two options for offshore development: fixed offshore wind farms in the shallow waters south and southwest of Providenciales Island, and floating offshore wind farms in deeper waters north of Providenciales Island. The study will evaluate the most viable options for harnessing the region’s wind resources and propose development timelines from 2025 to 2040.

Environmental impact is a key focus, with RICARDO-AEA LIMITED conducting an environmental feasibility study to assess potential effects on marine ecosystems, wildlife, and coastal environments. The study will also consider the resilience of wind installations to hurricanes and other storm activity.

Commissioner Arthur added, “This project not only represents a commitment to clean energy but also aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote sustainable development.”

The feasibility study supports TCI Vision 2040, the National Energy Policy, the Paris Agreement, and UN Sustainable Development Goal No. 7.
