Taiwan has awarded seven companies to supply and increase the country's offshore wind capacity.

The selected capacity was 3,098 MW out of a total capacity of 3,836MW. The Ministry of Economic Affairs held a press conference today (30th April 2018) to announce the results of the offshore wind power planning site selection meeting and capacity allocation.

The regional distribution of the selected capacity is: 2,400MW (62.6%) in Changhua City, 708MW (18.4%) in Yunlin, 378MW (9.9%) in Miaoli, and 350MW (9.1%) in Taoyuan.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs convened an offshore wind power planning site selection meeting on the 20th and 27th-28th of April to examine the completion of parallel applications in 2020 and 2021-2025.

According to the “Points for Selection of Offshore Wind Power Planning Sites” issued by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in January this year, the principle of 0.5GW was adopted for the completion of the parallel distribution of capacity in Taiwan in 2020, and 3GW was completed for parallel applications in Taiwan for 2021-2025.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that in addition to the selection of technical capabilities and financial capabilities, various industries have demonstrated the commitment of offshore wind power to local, industrial and local development and are looking forward to participating in domestic offshore wind power construction projects.

In addition to access to clean electricity, it will also steadily promote the transformation of both domestic manufacturing and service industries and promote the development of the local energy supply chain so as to create greater output value and more employment opportunities, and drive overall economic development. Unselected companies can participate in the auction in June this year. The bidding results will be announced by the end of June.

In the future, a total of 5.5GW of offshore wind farms will be set up. Accumulated total investments will reach an estimated £23b, creating a total of approximately 20,000 jobs and bringing about an annual carbon reduction of 10.47 million tons.
