Sunrise Wind, New York’s largest offshore wind project, has secured the final green light from the US Department of the Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for its construction and operations plan (COP). This milestone paves the way for the project to commence offshore construction.

With a capacity of 924 MW, Sunrise Wind is set to generate enough renewable energy to power nearly 600,000 homes in New York. The COP approval details the project’s wind turbine spacing, construction methodology in federal waters, and measures to protect marine habitats and species.

This approval follows BOEM’s Record of Decision issued in March 2024, which concluded a comprehensive environmental review. Ørsted and Eversource, the companies behind Sunrise Wind, have collaborated closely with various organizations to ensure the project meets stringent environmental and coexistence standards.

"Sunrise Wind is a centerpiece of New York’s clean energy vision, and with this final federal approval, we can officially put the construction phase in motion," said David Hardy, Executive Vice President and CEO of Region Americas at Ørsted. He praised BOEM’s leadership and the support from federal, state, and local leaders, emphasizing the project’s importance for the US energy sector.

Sunrise Wind has also finalized a 25-year offshore wind renewable energy certificate (OREC) contract with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The team will now focus on developing the onshore transmission system, with offshore construction expected to ramp up later this year. The project, located approximately 30 miles east of Montauk, New York, is slated to be operational in 2026.
