South Brooklyn Marine Terminal transformation begins with 'Groundbreaking Ceremony'

Equinor and the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), in collaboration with the State of New York, the City of New York, and the New York City Economic Development Council, are set to host a ceremonial groundbreaking on Monday, June 10, at 12:30 PM. This event marks the commencement of construction that will transform the historic port into a major offshore wind hub.

The transformed SBMT will feature a staging and assembly facility for offshore wind turbines, an operations and maintenance hub for Equinor’s Empire Wind 1 project, and the project's substation. The ceremony will include speeches from senior New York State and City government officials, Equinor executives, and community representatives, followed by a photo opportunity with attending dignitaries.

This groundbreaking is a significant milestone in New York’s mission to cut carbon emissions and boost the clean energy economy. It also aims to provide new opportunities for historically marginalised communities in New York, positioning SBMT as a source of long-term, skilled jobs and a central hub for the regional offshore wind industry for years to come.

Empire Wind, developed by Equinor, spans 80,000 acres located 15-30 miles southeast of Long Island, with water depths ranging from approximately 75 to 135 feet. Acquired in 2017, the project’s two phases—Empire Wind 1 and 2—have a combined potential capacity exceeding 2 GW, enough to power over 1 million New York homes.
