SiemensSiemens is releasing a new lithium-ion battery based solution to help tackle the issue of carbon emissions on offshore operations that can also be used by offshore wind projects.

The company's lithium-ion battery-based solution, known as BlueVault, can be used for both all-electric and hybrid energy-storage applications. BlueVault energy storage solutions are designed to ensure continuity of power and to minimise carbon dioxide emissions.

Pursuant to its research and development efforts and experience with harsh offshore operating environments, the company will open a fully robotised and digitalised plant in Norway that will develop and manufacture energy storage technologies for both marine and offshore oil and gas applications. Siemens say that BlueVault can also be used on offshore wind projects.

"Energy storage solutions provide a means to establish a stable, reliable electrical network by buffering intermittency and providing clean, dispatchable power,"
said Terje Krogh, CEO of Siemens Offshore Solutions.

Siemens state they have already signed contracts for the new energy storage system and is expecting the first one to be delivered in the summer of this year.
