SENSEWind to build 6 MW turbine in Scotland with innovative installation system

UK-based SENSEWind has announced plans to construct a 6 MW wind turbine at the Tormywheel Wind Farm in Central Scotland, using its pioneering modular self-installing tower and rotor nacelle assembly system. Scheduled for 2027, this project aims to showcase the self-installation capabilities of SENSEWind's new modular, tripod tower and a scaled-up version of their 2 MW turbine installation system.

This initiative follows the company's earlier plans to install a 2 MW demonstrator at Tormywheel in the first half of 2025. The 6 MW prototype will help transition from development to a commercial SENSE installation and service system, refining logistics, transport, and installation processes.
Julian Brown, Chair of SENSEWind, highlighted the system's safety and efficiency benefits, noting, "The SENSE system installs turbine rotor nacelles and conducts major repairs without needing expensive cranes. Automated remote control eliminates the risks of working under suspended loads, and service platforms provide safe working systems during the turbine's life."

The tripod tower, using standard steel pipes from the oil and gas industry, promises significant cost reductions. Rapid assembly with connectors from Aberdeen-based GMC further enhances efficiency by eliminating the need for flanged connections and regular maintenance of bolted joints.
Chris Walker, CEO of Muirhall Energy, expressed support for the project, stating, "The 6 MW demonstration solves the wind industry's challenge of economically transporting and constructing large turbines on remote sites. This project is a giant leap forward for the sector."
SENSEWind seeks additional investment to bring this innovation to market, aiming to increase safety, reduce costs and risks, and make remote onshore and offshore wind projects economically viable.

The SENSEWind project primarily focuses on onshore wind at the Tormywheel Wind Farm in Central Scotland. However, the company's technology and modular self-installing tower system are also intended to be applicable to fixed-bottom offshore wind installations by 2030. Thus, while the immediate project is onshore, the technology has broader implications for both onshore and offshore wind energy development.
