The Port of Açu in Brazil has offshore wind in its sights and is anticipating a multi-billion real investment over the next five years.

The port, located near Rio do Janeiro, is one of the world’s largest offshore support bases and several offshore wind farms are being planned in the vicinity. Prumo Logistica, which owns the port, has turned its attention to renewables and plans for the port to become Latin America’s main offshore wind hub.

“The new strategy is the industry based on energy transformation”, said Rogério Zampronha, President of Prumo Logística. “It's not a transformation, it's a revolution, the opening of a new market for a new Brazil. This can be as relevant to the Brazilian economy as agribusiness is today.”

According to Zampronha, R$22 billion of investment are planned over the next five years, which will help with the port’s development.

Already, there are 7,000 workers on the site, in 19 companies. Last year, the port handled 55.7 million tons, the seventh most in Brazil.

With its advantageous coastline, Brazil has attracted site investigation permit applications from developers representing a total of 169.4 GW worth of projects. Nine of these projects are proposed in the region of Rio do Janeiro.
