Offshore wind industry aims to boost UK supply chain innovation with standardised technology demonstration

In alignment with RenewableUK’s 'Wind Energy Week', the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership (OWGP) has unveiled a standardised technology demonstration agreement (STDA), aimed at streamlining the process for testing and demonstrating new products and services on offshore wind farms.

The STDA addresses a crucial stage in technology development that has been lacking consistent guidance: the testing and demonstration phase on operational wind farms. This stage is particularly challenging for small technology providers working with large wind farm operators.

The newly published agreement provides a template that outlines clear roles and responsibilities for both technology providers and operators. It also sets out the necessary steps to ensure successful demonstrations, facilitating a faster path to market for UK innovations by providing real-world performance data.

Developed by a task force of industry experts from OWGP, offshore wind developers, supply chain companies, and supported by the Offshore Wind Industry Council (OWIC) and RenewableUK, the STDA responds to recommendations from Tim Pick’s Offshore Wind Champion Report, which advocated for a standardised approach to technology demonstration agreements.

Tim Pick MBE, OWGP Director, commented on the development: “The offshore wind sector is brimming with high-potential innovations that often don’t come to fruition. This agreement provides a clear template and market access, helping more ideas become commercial realities and unlocking business growth, intellectual property, and exports for UK companies.”

Ajai Ahluwalia, Head of Supply Chain at RenewableUK, added: “The STDA is a much-needed advancement. It simplifies the process for operators to approve demonstrations, potentially improving asset performance. The STDA allows innovators and operators to clearly define risks and responsibilities, promoting consistency and transparency across the industry.”

The full Standard Technology Demonstration Agreement is now available at the Offshore Wind Growth Partnership website.
