Ocean Winds commences foundation installation for îles d’Yeu and Noirmoutier offshore wind farm

Ocean Winds, an international offshore wind energy company created through a joint venture by EDP Renewables and ENGIE, has announced the successful installation of the first foundation at the îles d’Yeu and Noirmoutier offshore wind farm. The installation was carried out by DEME’s vessel "Innovation," which arrived in the Port of La Rochelle on May 26.

The vessel transported two monopile foundations and two transition pieces to the project site, arriving after a 10-hour journey on May 29. The installation process began immediately, involving several carefully planned steps to ensure the safe and efficient placement of the equipment.

The steps included raising the Innovation vessel to stabilise it above the water surface, deploying the installation jig, drilling, installing the monopile, and finally, placing the transition piece. The installation of all 61 foundations is expected to continue until early 2025.

The monopiles, which began arriving at the Port of La Rochelle on April 5, vary in length from 45 to 68 meters to accommodate different depths at the wind farm site. Each foundation measures 7 meters in diameter and will be installed offshore until early 2025.

To ensure the safety of the operations, two local companies will monitor the site with surveillance vessels. The Alma Kappa from Alka Marine, a French specialist in marine renewable energy services, and the TSM Texel from Thomas Services Maritimes, a major maritime player in the energy transition, will provide continuous communication and compliance with navigation rules via VHF radio.

This significant milestone marks the beginning of a crucial phase in the development of the îles d’Yeu and Noirmoutier offshore wind farm, contributing to the advancement of renewable energy in the region.
