Ocean Winds has successfully exported the first power from the Moray West offshore wind farm to the National Electricity Transmission System (NETS). This milestone marks a significant step towards the full commissioning of the 882 MW wind farm, which is expected to be fully operational in 2025.

Construction vessels have been utilising the ports of Invergordon and Nigg, while Crew Transfer Vessels (CTVs) operate from Buckie harbour. Currently, the turbine components are being pre-assembled at the Port of Nigg for offshore installation. Meanwhile, the onshore substation is nearing completion with the first circuit already commissioned and the second in its final stages.

Ocean Winds’ Chief Operating Officer, Bautista Rodriguez, praised the achievement, stating, “Announcing first power for Moray West in the current international context marks Ocean Winds’ commitment to successful delivery, adaptability, reactivity, and resilience. With two more projects in development in the UK and Moray East already operating, we are proud to contribute to the UK’s energy transition.”

Pete Geddes, Project Director for Moray West, expressed pride in the project team and supply chain partners for their professionalism and dedication. “I am delighted that we have been able to maintain the project timeline and look forward to a timely handover to the new Operations team in early 2025,” Geddes said.

The Moray West project is part of Ocean Winds’ 6GW portfolio of secured offshore wind farms in the UK. It is expected to contribute over £800 million to the Scottish economy and create more than 1,500 Full Time Equivalent (FTE) years of employment during construction, with 70 long-term operational roles based in Buckie. The project underscores Ocean Winds’ commitment to local supply chains and education initiatives, including transitioning workers from the oil and gas sector and supporting PhD candidates in environmental studies.

With more than half of the investment and operating costs benefitting the UK economy, Moray West is poised to play a crucial role in the nation’s renewable energy landscape.
