LOC RenewablesLOC Renewables has reached an agreement to partner with the Taiwanese certification body, CR Classification Society, to offer marine warranty surveying services for Taiwanese offshore wind projects.

Under the terms of their agreement, LOC Renewables will jointly tender with CR Classification Society to provide MWS services for Taiwan’s offshore wind energy project pipeline. The partnership between LOC and CR will allow developers to meet local content requirements, while also invoking LOC’s global marine and engineering knowledge, gained from wokring on other offshore wind projects.

Donald Chao, Chairman of CR Classification Society, said: “It was my great pleasure and honour to sign the contract with LOC. Having spent 5 years looking for a team that we can cooperate with in Taiwan, we are pleased to begin this phase with the most experienced team as our partner. I look forward to a long and successful cooperation between us.”

Ahilan, Director of LOC Renewables and joint CEO of LOC Group, said: “We are very pleased to have embarked upon this significant partnership with Taiwan’s foremost classification society. The opportunities in the Taiwan Strait are incredibly promising for the offshore wind sector, but for developers there are also a lot of ‘unknowns’ to contend with.”

“This collaboration will enable developers to enter this emerging market, confident in the knowledge that they are benefitting from international expertise gained in more mature markets delivered locally without compromising standards or responsiveness.

Taiwan recently awarded contracts for over 3.8GW of new offshore wind projects in an auction process. With the government aiming to phase out nuclear power and derive 20% of the island’s power supply from renewables by 2025, the abundant wind resource in the Taiwan Strait has provided the incentive for international companies to enter the market.

Government strategy for expanding the offshore wind energy industry in the country puts an emphasis on the development of local skills and technology throughout the process. Bid-winning developers need to demonstrate a commitment to boosting local expertise in the areas such as engineering design and construction, as well as working with local financing partners.
