Innosea, a marine renewable energy specialist, has joined the EU-funded research and development consortium Floatfarm. This initiative aims to develop the next generation of environmentally friendly floating wind farms through innovative technologies and sustainable solutions.

According to Jean-Christophe Gilloteaux, Head of R&D at Innosea, “Floatfarm represents the next chapter for the technology – bringing together leading companies to explore new ways to enhance energy production and drive cost savings in the design and implementation stages of floating wind. Both will accelerate technology adoption, which is crucial to fulfill climate goals.”

Floatfarm combines innovative designs with real-world marine environment testing, experimental lab testing, and numerical analysis tools. The project has three primary objectives:

Advance the maturity and competitiveness of floating offshore wind through critical technology development in rotor design, mooring and anchoring, and wind farm control.

Provide a platform for the integration and testing of advanced technologies via the construction of a 1:7 scale 15 MW floating offshore wind turbine.

Enhance sustainability and improve environmental and socioeconomic impacts by advancing acoustic models and studying ecosystem interactions and sociological factors.

Innosea, based in Nantes, France, will develop a dynamic cable optimisation tool to automate the design process and explore innovative configurations. They will also investigate mooring systems and collaborate with Ecole Centrale de Nantes on the design of a shared mooring system to be tested at the institute’s facilities.

The four-year project, coordinated by The Technical University Berlin (TU Berlin), has commenced and promises significant advancements in floating wind technology.

Innosea, part of OWC, brings extensive experience from over 50 floating offshore wind projects.
