Elia conducts market survey for MOG 2

Belgian transmission system operator Elia will start a market survey in July 2019 to assess five market scopes which are critical to the realisation of its second Modular Offshore Grid (MOG) connection project. Elia aims to have a complete view of the market before starting official tender procedures.

By 2020, Elia anticipates that around 2.3 GW of offshore wind will be operational in the Belgium part of the North Sea. Belgium’s Energy Strategy has a target for 4 GW by 2030. The Offshore 2 (or MOG II) project is being developed to provide new grid infrastructure, including high-voltage platforms and cables, for the transmission of electricity generated by future offshore wind farms to the onshore grid.

Elia's first MOG project is currently under construction and is located in the Belgian part of the North Sea. It includes the installation of an offshore platform to provide connections for four offshore wind farms: Rentel, Northwester 2, Mermaid and Seastar. The platform will be located approximately 40km from the coast of Zeebrugge. Three 220kV submarine cables will link the platform with the Stevin substation in Zeebrugge, so that the produced wind energy can be integrated into the Belgian national grid. It is expected to be operational from the third quarter of 2019.

For MOG II, Elia has identified five contract scopes/market segments that are critical for the realisation of the MOG II project. This includes platform design, platform fabrication, platform installation as well as cable supply and cable installation.
