DeepOcean, an ocean services provider, has been awarded a contract by RWE for the Nordseecluster A offshore wind project in Germany. The agreement includes trenching, transport, and installation of all inter-array cables for the project’s wind turbines.

RWE recently made the final investment decision for its Nordseecluster, which comprises offshore wind projects with a total capacity of 1.6 GW. The Nordseecluster, situated approximately 50 kilometres north of Juist in the German North Sea, will be developed in two phases: Nordseecluster A and Nordseecluster B.

Having previously named DeepOcean as its preferred subsea installation services provider for Nordseecluster A in August last year, RWE has now finalised the contract. DeepOcean’s responsibilities will encompass preparatory work, transport, and installation of all inter-array cables, including trenching and terminations. This involves installing 185 kilometres of 66kV aluminum and copper cables to connect 44 offshore wind turbines.

“We look forward to mobilising a complete engineering, project management, and execution team that will support RWE on this important offshore wind development which will contribute to the decarbonisation of European industry,” said Øyvind Mikaelsen, CEO of DeepOcean.

Nordseecluster A will have a total capacity of 660 MW, with construction at sea slated to begin next year and all turbines expected to be grid-connected by early 2027. Nordseecluster B will add an additional 900 MW of capacity, targeting commercial operation by early 2029.

DeepOcean’s scope of work includes project management, engineering, offshore preparation work, cable route surveys, boulder relocation, and seabed monitoring. Project management will be based in Aberdeen, with support from the UK and Norway offices. Offshore preparations will begin in Q2 2025, with main works starting in early 2026, utilising three vessels for the project.
