Danish Energy Agency adjusts timeline for Energy Island Bornholm tenders

The Danish Energy Agency (DEA) has announced adjustments to the tender process for the Energy Island Bornholm project, citing a strained supplier market for both offshore wind and electrical infrastructure. A DEA spokesperson explained that the tender for cables and electrical equipment, managed by Energinet, will open first. The tender material was originally due to be published 'in the Spring'.

The market has requested clarity on key parameters, such as timeline and costs, which will be provided through Energinet’s tender. This tender process has already begun, though some milestones have been adjusted to better accommodate suppliers.

The DEA is currently evaluating the most appropriate process for the offshore wind tender material and expects to provide more information soon.

Background

In recent years, the Danish Parliament has approved a significant expansion of offshore wind farms to support the green transition and enhance energy security. The government plans to auction 9 GW of sites, with potential overplanting up to 14 GW or more.

The 3 GW tender for the Bornholm project is split into two parts:

Bornholm I: 1 GW

Bornholm II: 2 GW

Developers can submit bids for both sites but can only win one, pending final considerations. The combined maximum over-planting capacity for the sites is 3.8 GW. Winners will receive a feasibility study license, allowing them to immediately start the permitting process.
