The Biden-Harris administration continues to push forward with its clean energy agenda by announcing an offshore wind energy lease sale in the Central Atlantic, expected to power up to 2.2 million homes. The Department of the Interior revealed that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will auction these areas on August 14, 2024, potentially generating up to 6.3 gigawatts of renewable energy.

Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland, highlighted the administration’s commitment to a clean energy future, emphasizing the collaborative efforts with states, Tribes, and stakeholders to ensure efficient use of offshore resources. BOEM Director Elizabeth Klein added that the agency remains dedicated to environmentally responsible development of offshore wind energy.

This initiative is part of President Biden's broader Investing in America agenda, which aims to boost the economy through substantial investments in infrastructure, clean energy, and job creation. The Department of the Interior has already approved eight commercial-scale offshore wind projects and conducted four lease sales since the Biden administration began.

The upcoming lease sale will include two areas: one offshore Delaware and Maryland, and another offshore Virginia. Seventeen companies are qualified to participate. The Final Sale Notice (FSN), set to publish on June 29, outlines the details of the lease areas, auction procedures, and criteria for bid evaluation. More information can be found on BOEM’s website.

BOEM is also implementing lease stipulations to promote workforce training, supply chain development, and environmental considerations, including bidding credits for commitments to these areas. The agency continues to work with various stakeholders to identify further opportunities for offshore wind energy development.
