Today marks a significant milestone in Taiwan's renewable energy journey as Ørsted proudly announces the inauguration of Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms. With a combined installed capacity of 900 MW, the project stands as the largest in Taiwan and the entire Asia-Pacific region. This inauguration not only doubles Taiwan's offshore wind capacity but also accelerates the growth of Taiwan's offshore wind ecosystem.

The inauguration ceremony, held at Ørsted’s cutting-edge operations and maintenance hub at the Port of Taichung, welcomed esteemed guests including President Tsai Ing-wen and key figures from various sectors. President Tsai commended Ørsted for its commitment to Taiwan's renewable energy sector, highlighting the journey from the inception of the first two demonstration wind turbines of Formosa 1, eight years ago, to the completion of the monumental 900 MW project today. She emphasized the pivotal role Ørsted has played in Taiwan's energy transition and congratulated the company for its achievements.

Mads Nipper, Group President and CEO of Ørsted, expressed his pride in the inauguration, stating that Greater Changhua 1 and 2a represent Ørsted's first gigawatt-scale offshore wind farms outside of Europe. He reiterated Ørsted's dedication to green energy and outlined the company's ambitious projects worldwide, including the upcoming Greater Changhua 2b and 4 in Taiwan.

Per Mejnert Kristensen, CEO of Region APAC at Ørsted, emphasized the historic significance of Greater Changhua 1 and 2a, highlighting their role in advancing Taiwan's offshore wind industry and contributing to the nation's energy transition goals. He expressed gratitude to all stakeholders involved in the project and affirmed Ørsted's commitment to delivering more world-class wind farms in Taiwan.

The construction of Greater Changhua 1 and 2a commenced in March 2021, with the recent successful installation of all 111 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD wind turbines. The project, co-owned by Ørsted and Mercury Taiwan Holdings, has brought together renowned investors such as CDPQ and Cathay PE, marking a significant step towards Taiwan's low-carbon future.

Emmanuel Jaclot, Executive Vice-President and Head of Infrastructure for CDPQ, highlighted the collaborative effort between CDPQ, Ørsted, and Cathay PE in advancing Taiwan's energy transition. Jeff Chang, Chair of Cathay PE, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of today's event for Taiwan's renewable energy landscape.
The Greater Changhua offshore wind zone, including Greater Changhua 1 and 2a, has a combined capacity of approximately 2.4 GW, enough to power one million Taiwanese households annually and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1.75 million tonnes.

Ørsted remains committed to delivering stable and large-scale clean energy in Taiwan, with ongoing projects like Greater Changhua 2b and 4, in addition to the operational Formosa 1 offshore wind farm. Today's inauguration stands as a testament to Ørsted's vision for a sustainable energy future in Taiwan and beyond.
