In a significant move to bolster the UK's supply chain, National Grid has unveiled the Great Grid Partnership, marking a milestone in the nation's energy transition efforts. The initiative, aimed at advancing The Great Grid Upgrade, has enlisted seven industry partners to support the delivery of nine Accelerated Strategic Transmission Investment (ASTI) projects.

The Great Grid Upgrade is a crucial endeavour designed to enhance the nation's electricity network infrastructure, ultimately reducing reliance on fossil fuels by facilitating the connection of 50 GW of offshore wind power by 2030.

Under this pioneering 'enterprise model,' National Grid collaborates closely with its supply chain partners to expedite project delivery. The partnership involves two design and consenting service partners—AECOM Arup (JV) and WSP—and five construction partners—Laing O'Rourke, Morgan Sindall Infrastructure, Morrison Energy Services, Murphy, and Omexom / Taylor Woodrow (OTW).

This collaborative approach aims to streamline project planning and execution by leveraging the collective resources, skills, insights, and experience of all involved parties. By fostering long-term strategic relationships, the partnership seeks to drive innovation, efficiency, and value for money while benefiting consumers and local communities.

Carl Trowell, President of Strategic Infrastructure at National Grid, emphasised the significance of the Great Grid Partnership, highlighting its pivotal role in The Great Grid Upgrade. Trowell expressed confidence in the chosen partners, citing their track record of successful collaboration and innovation in delivering major projects.

The partnership's launch coincides with increasing global demand for energy transition-related products, services, and skills, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the industry. However, by working together, industry players can capitalise on these opportunities and contribute to the success of initiatives like The Great Grid Upgrade.

The nine ASTI projects targeted by the partnership include critical infrastructure developments such as Norwich to Tilbury North and South, North Humber to High Marnham, Grimsby to Walpole, Chesterfield to Willington, Brinsworth to High Marnham, Tilbury to Grain and Tilbury to Kingsnorth, and cable replacement and second circuit projects from Pentir to Trawsfynydd.

National Grid's commitment to driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and delivering value underscores its dedication to advancing the energy transition agenda and supporting the UK's sustainable future.
