Irish government publishes first draft Designated Maritime Area Plan

The Irish Government has opened public consultation on the draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan (SC-DMAP). The area has four potential areas for offshore renewable energy (ORE) development, including grid connected and non-grid connected ORE. Marine Area A in the draft SC-DMAP is likely to be the focus of the next off take auction ORESS 2.1, in which developers can bid to develop 900 MW of grid connected offshore wind capacity. Draft terms and conditions for the auction are scheduled to be published imminently with pre-qualification and bidding taking place later this year. The auction schedule is dependent on the adoption by Oireachtas (Irish government).

The draft South Coast Designated Maritime Area Plan for Offshore Renewable Energy (SC-DMAP) is the first sub-national, forward maritime spatial plan for offshore renewable energy proposed by the State. It will provide for the sustainable development of offshore wind through consideration of environmental protection and existing marine users and activities.

The draft SC-DMAP and its associated environmental assessments - Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Environmental Report and Natura Impact Statement (NIS) are available for public consultation from 3 May 2024 to 14 June 2024. During this time, the public is invited to make submissions which will inform possible revisions to the draft SC-DMAP.

The proposal was due to be announced in March this year but has been delayed.
